BAYBERRY, fragrant shrub, 25 seeds, salt tolerant
zoom
Bayberry (Myrica pensylvanica). Zone 5-9. This perennial shrub can grow to 12' and will tolerate many difficult situations. It grows near the ocean so is tolerant of sandy, poor soil, and salt spray. This makes it a good shrub to have growing near the road in the north as it can tolerate the salt from deicing the roads. It is very aromatic and is the source of wax for bayberry candles. The berries stay on the shrub for years. In order to get berries, you must have a male and female plant. I always sow 3 seeds together and treat them as one shrub which increases the chances that a male and a female are present. 25 seeds with directions on how to remove the wax for sowing. Full sun.
